A random puzzle for you

You have 12 marbles. One is either heavier or lighter than the others, but you don't know whether it's heavier or lighter. The only thing you can weigh them with to find out which is the marble with a different weight is a balance scale. So, how can you discover which marble has a different weight 100% of the time while weighing only 3 times? Hint: Weighing 6 against 6 doesn't do anything in this problem.

They had that puzzle as part of the True Dungeon at Gen Con in 2006. Too bad I don't remember the solution. Oh, well.

Never heard of it; my dad told me the puzzle and I never actually found out the solution (tried for about 10 minutes and got bored). My brother and sister know the answer though.

Oh, also, how do you get the Recent Comments sidebar Akusai? I noticed you have one on your blog.

It's here.

Two computer science majors did the majority of the legwork solving the puzzle when we encountered it. I'm terrible at logic puzzles like it, so I don't remember thing one about the solution.

True Dungeon, by the way, is a live-action dungeon-crawl that some guys put on at Gen Con, the biggest gaming convention in the world. It's all sorts of fun.
